Appanoose County is located in south central Iowa. It is named for Chief Appanoose, a 19th Century Native American Chief.
The seat and the largest city are both Centerville.
Main highways through the county include IA-2, IA-5 and IA-202.
The county borders Monroe, Wapello, Lucas, Davis and Wayne Counties in Iowa, as well as Schuyler and Putnam Counties in Missouri.
